On Wednesday morning, child actor Corey Haim passed away in a California hospital. He had reportedly been experiencing some flu-like symptoms in the last few days, but many speculate that he overdosed on prescription drugs.

It was well known that the actor struggled with substance abuse issues since the early 90s. He had admitted to smoking marijuana for the first time while filming The Lost Boys, and later turned to cocaine and crack. (more…)

According to this news article, Statewide Insurance in Rancho-Cordova, CA has just launched a new medical marijuana coverage program that is available to all 50 states. Although only 14 states have legalized medical marijuana, they hope to capture this market immediately as more states legalize it.

The community in the Tohono O’odham Nation reservation has had to alter many aspects of their lives because of drug smuggling. A New York Times article describes how the tribe is suffering from the occupation of border patrol officials trying to reduce drug smuggling (as well as human trafficking) along a 75-mile stretch of U.S. and Mexican border.

Many members of the tribe have had family members get involved in the drug trade because, they say, there simply are not enough legal jobs available. They also get involved out of fear of the consequences to saying no to members of drug cartels. Hundreds have gone to prison for their involvement.

There are a lot of interesting things happening in Colorado lately, as evidenced by my posts about using an iPhone app to discourage drunk driving and educating the public about date rape drugs. And just last week I wrote about the phenomenon of Medical Marijuana Millionaires. Now, I want to share an article about the difficulties that medical marijuana users are facing in the work place.

The article shares the stories of three state residents who had to meet with HR about their medical marijuana use. One of these employees came out in a published letter to the local newspaper, another after an accident they had while on duty, and the third after using marijuana at work.

I think most people would agree that medical marijuana is an interesting topic, albeit one that has drifted out of our minds during the current economic crisis.  Using marijuana for medical purposes is legal in a number of other countries but in the U.S. California is most widely recognized as allowing medical marijuana. In reality, a number of states allow it to be used to a variety of extents.

The medical marijuana industry in California has taken off at enormous speeds, creating what some are calling ‘Medical Marijuana Millionaires‘ (I’ll call them MMMs). There are supposedly a large group of people who have managed to earn buckets of money from being at the fore-front of this industry’s development.
